VPS Hosting Services
VPS hosting, is a type of web hosting service, which can easily be called, the most versatile hosting service available today. What are the benefits of the Virtual hosting? Why is it better, than other web hosting services? What can one do and cannot do with a Virtual Private Server? To better understand the answers to those questions, one must first be aware of
What is a VPS?
VPS is an acronym for Virtual Private Server. It is also commonly known as Virtual hosting, or Virtual Server. The name itself, pretty much explains what the actual service consists of. A VPS is a virtual server, which is created and hosted, on a physical such. In a way, it's a server, within the actual server. It has its own operating system, its own CPU and hard disk parameters and since it's a closed system, it doesn't interfere with other VPS accounts, which are hosted on the same physical machine. One may say that the VPS is the economic equivalent of a dedicated server hosting, although there are some differences which mostly consist of the limitations that each service has. That, however, will be discussed at a later point. First, let's take a look at
How is a VPS different than a shared hosting account?
Unlike shared hosting accounts, Virtual Servers have their own operating system and their processor usage limitation does not interfere with the physical server, thus doesn't affect other VPS accounts whatsoever. When a shared hosting account generates too high CPU usage, it will affect the other shared web hosting accounts hosted on that server as well, making them slower and less efficient. When the CPU usage gets too high, the whole hosting server may crash, resulting in downtime for all accounts, hosted on it. The VPS is a closed system, meaning that it cannot go over the amount of CPU that's assigned to it. For example, if a virtual private server account is allowed to use only 40% of the server's CPU time, then it will only be able to generate up to 40%, without being able to go to, for instance, 41% and put the whole hosting server at risk. This is very important, since it ensures that the VPS will not get suspended, by the hosting provider's staff, for putting other user accounts at the risk of a downtime. Another great advantage of the VPS hosting, is that the virtual servers have individual operating systems, which allows the VPS owner to make alterations to the OS files and settings. Why is that important? Some websites, require certain server features to be turned ON, or additionally installed, in order to function properly. Some of those features, however, are not available on shared hosting accounts, since they require too much CPU and hard drive usage. With a VPS service, the user, can actually login and update/change/add features which are required for hosting certain scripts and software. This is quite useful for people and companies, who wish to have a website that's "above average" in terms of both functionality and looks.
Other advantages of the VPS hosting service
A great thing about the VPs hosting services is that they are affordable. Unlike dedicated servers, Virtual hosting accounts are economic, although more expensive than the average shared hosting service. However, when having a large and popular website, with lots of functionalities that generate a lot of traffic and CPU usage, hosting it on a shared hosting account will mean risking constant downtime. Therefore, the VPS is a great solution for anybody that wants his website not to go down because of the traffic that it generates affects other users.
Disadvantages of the VPS hosting service
Beside the fact that the VPS packages are more expensive than normal shared web hosting accounts, they also require a certain level of technical abilities. Since, no web hosting provider will get involved, nor take any responsibilities for alterations made on the server's OS by the user, managing a VPS can be a little tricky for a novice user. Also, there are web hosting providers, who do not include a web hosting control panel, in their VPS offers, leaving the user to manage everything via a console, which is quite impossible for the average web hosting user. Luckily, most web hosting companies have taken actions in that directions and are offering control panels, such as cPanel and DirectAdmin with their virtual private server plans. Some providers, such as NTCHosting.com for instance, have even implemented their in-house built control panel, as a free optional service, in the VPS packages that they offer. This of course, makes it even easier for the user, since an in-house built control panel, is specifically built for the company's system, making it more efficient and allowing the user to take full advantage of the virtual service's functionalities.
